Perhaps I am unable to convey my point. Absolutely, the models you mentioned are very much 3D, but they gain their depth from folding.

I simply think tissue foil allows a folder to mold the shape rather than fold it – and this doesn’t seem like origami to me.

I second that recommendation -- don't start with Lang. Start with the library, and pick up any book that deals with basic folds, e.g., bird, waterbomb, frog, etc. Don't be offended by trying 'beginner" stuff, if you don't your failure to appreciate the art will be imminent. Molding or folding...

After seeing so many recent design styles I am starting to wonder when does Origami become molding instead of folding? Personally I put a lot of credence in a design which requires little “fiddlingâ€
