I haven't seen any folding traffic on this spectacular Pigeon. Has anyone tried to fold it ?

I have wanted to fold this model since I saw it. This thread made me decide to try it. Here's my first try, folded from 50cm foil-paper.





The colour changes don't make this model very paper efficient, the final model is only 15cm long from head to tail. It also makes the paper very thick inside, hence the shoddy shaping.

Does anyone know how to get the second bar on the wing?

Maybe i could try it also.

Wizmatt - Wow ! That is an excellent first attempt. I have no clue how to fold it, but here are my observations, compared to Seth's model:

1. The second bar looks like it is the same color change across the mid-horizontal flap, as you did for the upper bar - sorry if that is obvious.

2. Seth's toes seem to be folded in half (smaller) and more separated.

3. Seth's model seems to be angled more upright, around 60 degrees.

4. I'm not sure about how the head and neck are folded, like a double rabbit ear or a 3D Swallowtail crimp ( ? ) http://www.paperfolding.com/chengchit/3d.php

However, if you folded the next model dark blue and white paper, I believe that your approach would look very similar to Seth's, like a different position of the same model.

Thanks for the feedback Hanksimon.

The cp took just over an hour to precrease, and about half an hour to collapse the base. It took about another 45mins - hour to fiddle with the base and shape the model. The tail was the trickiest part, I did it by unsinking the pleated sections and wraping them around so they were the right way, although it made the back quite chunky.

As for the second bar. The first bar is easy to do because it comes from the edge, a flap is already folded over to perform the colour change of the head. This leaves a 168.5 degree angle that that forms the bar with a pleat. The second bar must come from the same edge, but it cannot be done in the same way. You've basically got a point as you would from a bird base with a crimp half way along to do the colour change......I hope this makes sense.

The head is a swallow tail crimp, it was just hard to get it more upright due to the layers.

I have now thinned the feet and shaped them better.

I think Seth taught this model at the OUSA convention in 2007, so if anybody can offer any advive from the class it would be very much appreciated.

Haha, that was funny-I remember a bunch of people at late night folding with giant orange pieces of paper saying they were making pigeons

I don't think there are any foldable references for the points. On Seths' flickr he gives the reference for the point nearest the middle with all the 22.5 degree angles radiating out. This is .3867 .3867, I found this using a ruler and a calculator.
